American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED

In this class participants will learn how to recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies.  This program teaches skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.

American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training (Ages 15 and Up)

 VII.  Saturdays, Sundays  April 28, 29, May 12, 13   9am – 3:30pm
VIII.  Saturdays, Sundays  May 26, 27, June 2, 3  9am – 3:30pm
IX.  Saturdays, Sundays  June 9, 10, 16, 17  9am – 3:30pm

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training covers the fundamental skills required to become a lifeguard.  All students must be 15 years of age by the last day of class. Prerequisites: 300 yards continuously (100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke using a pull, breathe, kick and glide sequence, and 100 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke).  Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 lb object, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object, holding the object with both hands and keeping his face above the water. You must attend all classes within the session. (Successful completion of this course will certify the candidate in ARC Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED). American Red Cross (ARC) CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Review
“Recertification” (stand alone) (5hr class)

I.  Tuesday               May 15 4pm – 9pm

III.  Thursday         May 24  4pm-9pm

Fee:  $75.00

American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Review “Receritfication” (16hr class)

I.  Saturday, Sunday                May 19, 20            9am – 4pm
II.  Mon/Wed/Fri                     May 14, 16, 18      4pm – 10pm

The participant will have the opportunity to view video segments, practice and  perform skills and scenarios for evaluation as well as completing final written exams.  The participant must have successfully completed the ARC Lifeguarding course within the last 4 years and the CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer within the last 2 years.  You must have your own participant’s manual and pocket mastk.

Fee:  $125.00

American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Instructor Course

I.  Saturdays, Sundays   April 28, 29, May 12, 13   9am – 3:30pm

Lifeguard Instructor candidates will be trained to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguard Course.
Prerequisites:  Must be 17 years old by the last day of the class.  Must successfully complete the prerequisite skill for lifeguarding, attend and participate in all class sessions, demonstrate competency in all required skills, pass two written exams with a minimum grade of 80% and demonstrate competency in all three final rescue skill scenarios.  (Successful completion of this course will certify the candidate as a ARC Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor.)  For more information please contact Kim Resnick at kresnick@gmu.edu or 703-993-8511.

American Red Cross (ARC) Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

I.  Saturdays, Sundays   June 2, 3, 9, 10  9am – 5pm

WSI candidates are trained to teach all levels of the ARC swimming classes.  Prerequisites:  Must be 16 years old by the last day of the class.  Must be able to demonstrate the following skills consistent with the Level 4 performance chart: 25 yards of the front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and 15 yards of the butterfly.  Must be able to float or scull on back in deep water for 1 minute as well as tread water for 1 minute.  

Fee:  $225.00
